Venue lighting is not office lighting with colour added. Here is what actually differs — and which of those differences decide the cost.
A venue asks lighting to do things an office never does: change during use, hold a colour on camera, dim smoothly to almost nothing, and survive being run at full output for hours. Those requirements land on four things — the dimming protocol, the driver, the colour quality of the fitting, and the life-safety lighting that has to stay lit whatever the house lights are doing.

Dimming is a protocol decision, not a fitting decision
The most common and most expensive mistake is buying fittings first and deciding how to control them afterwards. Three control approaches dominate commercial venues. 0-10V is the simplest and the crudest: one analogue pair per circuit, no addressing, no feedback, and dimming that usually stops well above zero. DALI addresses each fitting individually and reports its own status back, which is what makes maintenance and zoning practical in a large room. DMX512, standardised as ANSI E1.11, is the entertainment protocol: fast enough for live changes and effects, and the reason a lighting desk can drive a show at all.
The protocol has to be chosen before the fittings, because a fitting that only accepts 0-10V cannot later be made to take DMX cues, and running a venue's architectural lighting on a protocol with no addressing means every change becomes a rewiring job.
Flicker is invisible until a camera is present
LED output follows its driver current almost instantly, so any ripple in the drive current becomes a ripple in light. The eye rarely notices it; a camera shutter does, and the result is banding across the frame or a pulsing image — usually discovered on the first event that gets filmed or streamed.
This is a driver specification, not a lamp specification. IEEE 1789 sets out the recommended limits on modulation depth and frequency, and drivers that meet them are readily available. It costs very little at specification time and is expensive to fix afterwards, because it means replacing drivers throughout the room.
Colour rendering decides how the room photographs
CRI is the familiar number, but it averages eight pastel samples and can hide poor rendering of saturated colour — most visibly deep red, which matters for skin tones, food and merchandise. TM-30 reports fidelity and gamut separately and gives a more honest picture of how a fitting will actually render a space.
For venues the practical questions are whether the whites match across every fitting in view, whether they still match after a few thousand hours, and whether the colour temperature suits what the room is used for. Mixing batches or manufacturers in one sightline is what produces the patchwork ceiling that no amount of commissioning will fix.
Drivers, inrush and circuit design
LED drivers draw a brief but very high inrush current at switch-on. A circuit sized purely on steady-state load can therefore trip its breaker every time the room is switched on, even though nothing is faulty and nothing is overloaded. The fix is to account for inrush in breaker selection and to stagger switching across circuits, both of which are design decisions rather than site fixes.
The wiring itself falls under NFPA 70, adopted in Georgia through the State Minimum Standard Codes, with Article 410 covering luminaires; lighting power density and the required automatic controls come from ANSI/ASHRAE/IES 90.1 and the state energy code.
The lighting that is not allowed to go dark
Whatever a venue does with its house lights, the means of egress has to stay illuminated and the exit signs have to stay visible. NFPA 101 governs this, and it is why egress and exit lighting sit on their own circuits and their own supply rather than on the dimming system. In a room designed to go to near-darkness during use, this separation is not a detail — it is the part an inspector will look at first.
Illuminance targets for the space itself come from the IES recommended practices, which give the numbers a layout is designed against rather than judged by eye.
What this means for a budget
In a venue the fittings are rarely the largest line. Control infrastructure, the distinction between dimmed and undimmed circuits, driver quality and access for maintenance usually move the number more than the choice of luminaire. Deciding the control protocol and the flicker specification early is what keeps those costs predictable, because both are cheap to specify and expensive to retrofit.
