Architectural lighting design is the practice of lighting a building to serve both how it is used and how it is meant to be experienced. It is distinct from specifying fixtures to reach a required illuminance, which is an engineering calculation and only part of the job.

Designing in layers
A designed scheme is normally built from layers. Ambient light establishes the general level in the space. Task light serves specific activities at specific surfaces. Accent light draws attention to what should be noticed — a facade detail, a reception desk, a product display. Decorative fixtures are themselves part of what is seen.
Separating these layers is what makes a space adaptable. The same room can support a working morning, a presentation and an evening reception because the layers are controlled independently rather than everything being on one circuit.
Colour temperature and colour rendering
Colour temperature describes whether light appears warm or cool. Colour rendering describes how accurately it reveals the colour of what it falls on. They are independent, and the second is the one more often neglected.
In retail, hospitality and any space where materials and finishes matter, poor colour rendering makes an expensive interior look wrong in a way clients notice without being able to name. Consistency matters too: fixtures from different batches or manufacturers can differ visibly, which is why a scheme specifies tolerances rather than just a number.
Control systems
Control is what turns a set of fixtures into a lighting system. DMX originated in entertainment lighting and is used where scenes change dynamically — facades, venues, feature installations. DALI is a bidirectional protocol common in architectural and commercial interiors, where each fixture is individually addressable and can report its own status. Larger buildings often integrate lighting into a wider building management system.
The choice of protocol has consequences for cabling and for who can maintain the system afterwards, so it belongs in the design conversation early rather than being inherited from whichever fixtures were selected.
Where lighting design meets electrical engineering
A lighting scheme implies loads, circuits, control wiring and often dedicated containment. Facade and feature lighting adds weather rating, access for maintenance and structural fixing to the list. Emergency lighting has its own requirements that run in parallel with the designed scheme rather than being part of it.
